There are plenty of people making new electronic music but few are dropping remix hits like Jared Poythress and Nick Dew, aka Religion.

Their buildups and key samples keep your head bobbing and body moving. Since they’ve interacted in the studio with the likes of Flo Rida and Childish Gambino I can’t wait for the hits to keep coming.

If you enjoyed this track check out Boys Noize Ich R U (Religion Remix). And if “You wanna dance!?” Look for a full EP from Religion soon!

Technology Thursday: iPhone 3GS

My grand idea of spending a month living with a dumbphone was short lived for two reasons:

  1. It was a bad idea.
  2. The generosity of my lovely sister, Carson Rahrig.

Over spring break I was lucky enough to move forward in the world of technology; giving up a 6 year old dumbphone for a soon to be 4 year old smartphone. What smartphone you ask? In case you missed the title, it’s the lovely iPhone 3GS:

I am glad to once again be back in the world of touch screens and cloud data but for a phone I once waited months for it isn’t anything special today. However, I won’t complain because it’s capable of doing everything that makes my life easier (email, calendar, web browsing) and that’s good enough for me!

However, my dumbphone experience lasted a little over a week and I wanted to share some things I learned and experienced:

  • notification overload - this phenomenon completely went away. I was no longer bothered by notifications regarding email, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Soundcloud, etc. It was somewhat of a forced escape but I’ve use the “Do Not Disturb” feature in iOS on a regular basis since I’ve started using it
  • calendars - for those of you that don’t know I use Google Calendar, too much and when I was unable to access my seven different calendars I was a little lost but I manged to make it to work, class, meetings and other extra curricular activities on time
  • phone numbers - I don’t know anyone’s phone number from memory aside from my direct family. This scared me.
  • sharing - I was less able to share. At one point I wanted to take a photo and post it in a Facebook group but that certainly wasn’t possible.
  • text message inbox limit - completely forgot this was a thing. Clearing your text message inbox? That’s so 2006!
  • battery life - the battery life was still amazing, the phone lasted two days without a recharge!

My dumbphone and I had a great spring fling but I’m glad I’ve begun the move back into the world of the modern smartphone.

I’ll be using this iPhone 3GS until the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in Q2.

Looking for forward to next week and my first “Trendy Thursday” post.

Tall Tuesday: Shelves

“Excuse me sir, would you mind helping me?” a short elderly woman asks on a trip to the grocery store. I reply with an inquisitive, “Sure?”

“Would you mind grabbing that sauce off the top shelf?”

“Not a problem!” As I hand the elderly woman one of the last jars of sauce.

Similar requests have been asked while I’m shopping at the grocery store. Also, these requests aren’t limited to the grocery store. I’m used to getting things off the selves of bookcases, closets, pantries and cabinets.

At any rate, next time you need a helping hand getting an object slightly out of your reach don’t hesitate to give me a call and I’ll use my power of height to save the day.

These are the facts of reaching things while 2m tall.

Music Monday: Clinton Sparks - Boston Bass (via clintonsparks)

Clinton Sparks is one of my favorite producers and if you’ve never heard of him, Get Familiar!

I loved the Irish folk music sample combined with a traptastic baseline giving me the perfect way to wish you all a belated Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The Hood Internet - Suit & Commercial (Justin Timberlake x Daft Punk) (via hoodinternet)

I’m glad remixes are finally coming in to make this song bearable. Thank you, The Hood Internet and Dillon Francis.

OCD: Moosh & Twist - Top Of The World (Official Music Video) (by twist135)

These two guys are making their dream come true.

Norman Greenbaun - Spirit In The Sky (D.veloped Remix) (via D.VELOPED)

Remix made by D.VELOPED using Norman Greenbaum’s classic hit. Other artists on the track are Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.

Spring Blogging Break

I’m taking a break from my formal structure this week. I’ll still post a few entries and I’ll be back with all new content next week.

It’s a beautiful time of year since spring is here! And more specifically it’s a beautiful day:

Photo Friday: BALLIN - Gregory Gymnasium
This is my friend Bill Han, he’s pretty good at basketball. I’m sharing this image today because it encapsulates the feeling of the entire SEC IM basketball team, during every game.
This wonderful animated GIF was made possible by Shan Modi and the SEC IM Basketball League.

Technology Thursday: Dumbphone

Using the overwhelming number of responses (three of seven) I’ll be transitioning these posts to “Trendy Thursday” in the near future but first I’m going to tell a story of taking a jump back to a phone of days past.

Earlier this week the LCD on my wonderful Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket passed away upon falling to the ground after a late night of studying.

As the liquid crystals spread throughout the screen I quickly realized I needed a stand in cellular device until I was able to purchase a replacement phone.

I began asking friends if they had old cellphones lying around, even rummaging through my roommates old phones to remember I had some in a bag of electronic waste my parents brought during their last visit! Luckily the SEC eCycling event hasn’t happened or I would have been stuck up a creek without a paddle.

At any rate I dug the wonderful Samsung SGH-a707 (picture above) out of the bag of old electronics, popped my SIM card in and start charging the battery. Luckily, everything worked. Then the real fun began.

A person being four years old, not very old. A piece of technology being four years old, very old. I first realized this as I reacquainted myself with the user interface and capabilities of the phone. It could text, make phone calls and “browse the web”.

The next struggle came as I remembered how to use T9. Remember T9? Oh the world before predictive text! Shortly after I realized I no longer had access to my contacts, calendar, email or social media. I felt lost. Alone. Scared.

Then I realized this was a perfect opportunity to conduct and experiment! Until I get my hands on the Samsung Galaxy S4, I’ll share the changes in my daily routine and other experiences as I use this “dumbphone” for the next couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing my behaviors change.

Wordup Wednesday: 3OH!3 - “BACK TO LIFE” (Official Video) (by TheWarnerSound)

This is the video for 3OH!3’s newest single, “Back to Life”. The video premiered yesterday and continues receiving positive reception from their fan base. It holds true to their normal style of an over the top music video that delivers laughs along the way.

I am interested to see where Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte head with their fourth album, Omens. The calmness of the track is nice but I know they’ll have a pop hit with another track on the EP because this duo brought you “Don’t Trust Me” and “My First Kiss (feat. Ke$ha)

As much as people will hate I always enjoy throwing back and jamming to some good ol’ 3OH!3!

Thanks to 3OH!3 for introducing me to this video!
